What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced RAY-kee) is a Japanese energy healing practice developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. The word translates to “universal life energy,” the idea that a natural life force flows through all living things, and that when that flow is disrupted, we feel it as stress, pain, or imbalance.
A Reiki session works with that energy to support the body’s natural ability to restore balance. It is gentle, non-invasive, and deeply relaxing.
People come to Reiki for many reasons: chronic stress, physical tension, emotional heaviness, grief, life transitions, or simply a need for stillness. Most leave feeling calmer, lighter, and more like themselves.
Reiki does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. It works alongside, not instead of, conventional care.
How Does Reiki Work?
The body has an energy field that surrounds and flows through it. When energy moves freely, we tend to feel better—physically, mentally, and emotionally. When energy becomes blocked or stagnant, it can contribute to stress, discomfort, or imbalance.
We also absorb and carry energy from the people, environments, and situations around us. Over time this can leave us feeling drained, heavy, or out of sorts in ways that are hard to explain. Reiki helps clear what isn’t yours and supports you in returning to your own natural state of balance.
Reiki works by supporting the flow of energy through the body. During a session, the practitioner channels universal life energy through her hands, helping to clear blockages and restore balance. This shifts the body from a stress state into a natural state of rest and repair, where healing can occur more easily.
You don’t need to believe in Reiki for it to be effective. Many people come in skeptical and leave feeling a noticeable difference. The best way to understand how Reiki works is to experience it.
How Reiki Can Help
Reiki engages the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body out of stress response and into a natural state of rest and repair. It is commonly used to support relaxation, stress reduction, easing anxiety, emotional balance, and overall well-being. Reiki is offered in hospitals, hospices, and integrative medicine programs around the world.
What Happens in a Session
You lie fully clothed on a comfortable massage table. The Reiki practitioner places her hands lightly on or just above the body, moving through a series of positions. Many people feel warmth, tingling, or a deep sense of calm. Some fall asleep. Some people may feel very little during the session and still notice a shift in the hours or days that follow. There is no muscle manipulation or pressure.

Distance Reiki
Reiki works on an energetic level that is not bound by physical location. Many people report similar benefits from distance sessions as they do from in-person.
At VelaSky Healing, distance sessions are offered via Zoom, phone, or text, whichever feels most comfortable to you.

Animal Reiki
Animals are often deeply receptive to Reiki, from pets like cats, dogs, and birds to farm and ranch animals like horses and sheep. At VelaSky Healing, Animal Reiki sessions use a meditation-based approach that places healing choice entirely with the animal.
Animal Reiki can support a wide range of needs: anxiety and stress, recovery from injury or surgery, chronic pain, behavioral challenges, and adjustment to life changes like a new home or family member. It also offers comfort and peace for senior animals, those recovering from trauma, and animals navigating end-of-life transitions.
Because animals are most at ease in their own environment, all sessions are offered via distance: Video, phone, or text. Sessions are 30 minutes, as animals naturally take what they need and step away when ready.”
